ABOUT THE ARTIST

Memphis based ceramicist, Tawny Skye, has been bringing the Me Too Movement to the Memphis art scene since 2015. Working predominately in clay, she is a multidisciplinary artist using techniques from blacksmithing and oil painting and incorporating them into her ceramic forms. Her ceramic techniques are unique to her forms, using a throwing and altering method that takes the idea of the symmetrical, wheel-thrown vessels and modifies them by tearing, creasing, combining, and pushing out new forms.

Visually driven by the works of Georgia O’Keefe and the female form outside of the male gaze, she creates forms to display the aspects of women that symbolize their strength. Inspired by her past experiences with sexual violence and the current Me Too movement, Tawny uses her work to create platforms and safe spaces for those who have been affected. Her main goal is to add to the conversation and help other survivors have their voices heard and feel a sense of community.
